Seedling Day is also Emily's Birthday

Today is April 25th. It also happens to be Emily's 23rd birthday. I thought it would be most appropriate to start my warm weather seedlings in the greenhouse today.

I realize that the nurseries and markets are brimming with vegetable packs, but I am a firm believer that our Central Coast summertime goes from May until the end of October. It makes no sense to put seeds or starts in the ground too early. Therefore, I am just now starting Cucumbers, Onions, Melons and Squash. (I already started tomatoes, peppers and eggplants).

Specifically, I planted the following varieties:

Cucumbers

  • Lemon Cucumber - Gourmet Seed International
  • Telegraph Improved Cucumber - Gourmet Seed International
  • Camilla F1 Hybrid Cucumber - Gourmet Seed International Gourmetseed.com
Melons
  • Summer Dream F1 Hybrid Melon - Gourmet Seed International
  • Tasty Bites Melon - Gourmet Seed International
I am waiting on seed from Gurney's to start a melon called "Gurney's Giant Improved Hybrid". I grew this melon last year and it provided an abundance of large, very sweet cantaloupe. Gurneys.com

Onions

  • Cipolla Rossa Savonese Onion - Bavicchi Seeds Italianseedandtool.com
  • Lunga Di Firenze Onion - Gourmet Seed International
  • Walla Walla Onion - Gourmet Seed International
Lettuce

  • Lattuga Cappuccio Lettuce  - Bavicchi Seeds

Where do I get my seeds ?

By now you can probably tell that I like to use Italian seed varieties.  I buy most of the seed I use from three companies. They are Gourmet Seed International, Bavicchi Seeds and Gurney's seeds. Bavicchi is actually owned by Gourmet Seed International. I like these companies as they provide a wide range of varieties and each seed packet is filled with a generous amount of seeds. Besides, Bavicchi's seed packets are beautiful !
